The Angels

(L to R - Buzz Bidstrup, Rick Brewster, Doc Neeson, John Brewster and Chris Bailey)In mid-1974, the Moonshine Jug and String Band rebranded as the Keystone Angels, featuring John Brewster (lead vocals, bass), Rick (guitar), Neeson (bass, vocals), Peter Christopolous (Charlie King, drums), and Laurie Lever (keyboards). Transitioning to electric instruments, they played 1950s rock and roll on the pub circuit and promoted their upcoming performances in Go-Set magazine. After Lever's departure in 1974, the remaining members performed at the Sunbury Pop Festival and supported AC/DC and Chuck Berry. They released their sole single, "Keep on Dancin'," in that year. In 1976, recommended by Bon Scott and Malcolm Young from AC/DC, the band signed with Albert Productions, shortened their name to The Angels, and moved to Sydney. Their lineup included Neeson (lead vocals, bass), King (drums), Rick (lead guitar), and John Brewster (rhythm guitar). March 1976 saw the release of their first single, "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again," produced by Vanda & Young and co-written by the Brewsters and Neeson. They made their TV debut on Countdown and later replaced King with Graham "Buzz Throckman" Bidstrup and added Chris Bailey on bass. Their self-titled debut album, released in August 1977, featured a re-recorded version of their first single and was primarily co-written by Neeson and the Brewster brothers. The Angels' second album, 'Face to Face', released in June 1978, reached No. 16 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart and achieved 4× platinum status with 280,000 units sold. By 1978, they were Australia's highest-paid band, known for their energetic performances and theatrical stage presence led by Neeson. The album also produced their first Top 50 hit with "Take a Long Line," which peaked at No. 29. In November 1978, they supported David Bowie during his Australian tour, although their performance was mixed. They released their first EP, 'After the Rain – The Tour', alongside this tour. Their third studio album, 'No Exit', released in June 1979, peaked at No. 8 and featured backing vocals from George Young on "Out of the Blue."In 1979, No Exit produced the single "Shadow Boxer," which peaked at No. 25. On September 29 of that year, Alberts released the Out of the Blue EP, which included their third version of "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again," reaching No. 29 on the Kent Music Report Singles Chart. On New Year's Eve, the band played to almost 60,000 people at the Sydney Opera House, but their performance was cut short by a riot, resulting in injuries to members Neeson and Bailey. In March 1980, The Angels signed an international contract with CBS Records and released a revised version of Face to Face under the name Angel City, to avoid legal issues with another band. Despite their dislike for the name, they toured the US and Canada that year. Their performances were well-received, with critics noting their high energy and ability to engage hard-to-please audiences. In June 1980, they released their fourth studio album, Dark Room, which peaked at No. 5 in Australia and featured the hit single "No Secrets," reaching No. 8. Following the departure of drummer Bidstrup in March 1981, he was replaced by Brent Eccles. They released the non-album single "Into the Heat," which peaked at No. 14, and a live EP, Never So Live, which reached No. 17. In November 1981, they released their fifth studio album, Night Attack, which peaked at No. 11 in Australia. However, Bailey left the band early in 1982 due to visa issues, and session musician Jim Hilbun was brought in as his replacement. Bailey and Bidstrup would eventually join Ganggajang.  In January 1983, the Angels headlined the inaugural Narara Music Festival, which Neeson arranged to film as he planned to leave the band for an acting career. The performance was released as "Live at Narara" on VHS in 1988. After the festival, Neeson continued with the group. In May 1983, they released their sixth studio album, "Watch the Red," which peaked at No. 6 in Australia and marked their transition to Mushroom Records with distribution by MCA. Critically acclaimed, the album featured saxophone leads from Hilbun and a mix of musical styles, incorporating elements from a jam session. The lead single, "Stand Up," reached No. 21 in Australia, while the second single, "Eat City," peaked at No. 22. During a tour supporting the Kinks, frontman Ray Davies reportedly felt overshadowed by the Angels' reception. Their seventh album, "Two Minute Warning," was released in January 1985, produced by Ashley Howe. It peaked at No. 5 in Australia and included the top 60 single "Underground." Unfortunately, MCA's personnel changes led to limited support for the album. The band performed as Angel City during the 1985 Oz for Africa concert. After John Brewster left in February 1986, ex-Skyhooks guitarist Bob Spencer joined. Their eighth studio album, "Howling," was released in October 1986 and reached No. 6 in Australia, featuring their highest-charting single, a cover of "We Gotta Get out of This Place," which reached No. 7 in January 1987.In May 1988, Spencer broke his wrist during a performance, leading Jimi "The Human" Hocking to fill in on national tour dates. Initially hired for one night, Hocking impressed the band and was offered the guitar position for the tour's duration, which featured a sprawling three-hour set showcasing the band's history. After the tour, Spencer returned, while Hocking formed his own band, Jimi the Human and Spectre 7. In November 1989, Chrysalis Records released the Angels' ninth studio album, 'Beyond Salvation', recorded in Memphis with producer Terry Manning. The international version included four new tracks, while the Australian release in February 1990 featured eight new songs and became the band's only No. 1 album in Australia, certified platinum after selling 70,000 copies, and peaking at No. 3 in New Zealand. The album produced five singles, with "Let the Night Roll On" reaching No. 17 and "Dogs are Talking" peaking at No. 11, later certified gold. The 'Beyond Salvation' tour featured Cheap Trick and highlighted new Australian bands like the Desert Cats and Baby Animals. Their tenth studio album, 'Red Back Fever', released in November 1991, included tracks from the earlier sessions and reached No. 14 in Australia. The single "Tear Me Apart" was part of a campaign against alcohol-related violence, reaching the top 40. The band toured for two years before Spencer and Morley departed in 1992.In 1994, the New Zealand chapter of Hells Angels invited the band to perform, leading to the release of their compilation album, 'Evidence', which included the new tracks "Don't Need Mercy" and "Turn It On." The following year, in April 1995, they headlined the Barbed Wire Ball tour alongside the Screaming Jets and others. After a brief hiatus, they regrouped in 1996 to record their eleventh studio album, 'Skin & Bone' (1998). During the Lounge Lizard Tour in July 1997, they collaborated with guest vocalists Angry Anderson and Ross Wilson. After signing with Shock Records, they released "Caught in the Night" in October 1997, followed by 'Skin & Bone', which peaked at No. 29 on the ARIA Albums Chart. They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on October 20, 1998, and performed at the Concert of the Century that November. The band's last concert with Doc Neeson was on New Year's Eve 1999, after which he announced a hiatus due to a serious car accident. The band effectively ceased operations. In November 2000, Shock Records reissued 'Left Hand Drive', and in 2001, they appeared on an ABC music series. Competing versions of the band emerged, including "Members of the Angels" and the "Original Angels Band". Neeson formed Red Phoenix, releasing an album in 2005, while the Angels' catalogue was reissued in 2006. Disputes over the band name culminated in Neeson winning a legal injunction in 2007. He then toured as Doc Neeson's Angels, releasing 'Acoustic Sessions', while the Brewster-led band released an EP, 'Ivory Stairs'.In late 2010, Bernard Neeson returned to a solo career by forming the Angels 100% with Bidstrup, Hilbun, Morley, and Spencer. They performed a private show for 1,000 people at a Western Australia mining site in late 2012. In May 2011, Bailey and the Brewsters added drummer Nick Norton and Screaming Jets singer Dave Gleeson, leading to the release of the EP 'Waiting for the Sun' in June 2011 and a live album recorded in Brisbane in January 2012. On August 31, 2012, the Angels released 'Take It to the Streets', their first studio album in 14 years, reaching No. 24 on the ARIA charts, along with 'Live at QPAC', their first live album since 1988. Tragedy struck in January 2013 when Bailey was diagnosed with throat cancer, passing away on April 4, 2013, at 62, followed by a tribute concert. On January 10, 2013, Neeson revealed his brain tumour diagnosis; he performed at a benefit concert in April but died on June 4, 2014, at 67. The Angels co-headlined the "They Who Rock 2019" tour with Baby Animals, releasing a cover of "One Word" in October 2019. They returned with the EP 'Under the Stone' in June 2020, their first new material in six years, and were recognised as the 45th greatest Australian artists by 'Rolling Stone Australia'. In December 2021, they performed with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in a concert titled "Symphony of Angels." The following year, the Brewster brothers collaborated with Dune Rats to cover "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again." In May 2023, Gleeson stepped down as lead vocalist, with Nick Norton taking over and Tom Brewster joining as drummer. By May 2024, the band announced their new studio album, 'Ninety Nine', marking their first release in ten years.
